I grew up in upstate NY and worked for the state doing public health in places like Auburn and have seen the degradation of quality of life in rural areas and think that we should do much more to help people to leave for areas with greater supports/population but let’s stop acting like the was anything natural/necessary about populating these areas, first the feds (and to some degree the states themselves) wanted to occupy the land for political purposes and then with more mass-farming and expanded transportation to support factories there were some market-driven (but still government framed) imperatives at work and now neither the feds (nor the states) nor the markets need many people there any more. As there is no realistic future for most of these communities and we should stop with the false-hope campaigns and the using these people (as “real” Americans) as PR props and get to helping them to relocate with needed supports.
