Political campaigns are critical to American governance and democracy, but we often do not consider how campaigns and the people who run them influence elections and policy.

In this episode of The Annex Sociology Podcast, we sit down with Daniel Laurison (Swarthmore College) to discuss his acclaimed new book,  Producing Politics: Inside the Exclusive Campaign World Where the Privileged Few Shape Politics for All of Us (2022, Beacon Press).  We will discuss Prof. Laurison’s firsthand observations in studying campaigns and meeting campaign professionals, and what they tell us about the inner workings of political campaigns.  Producing Politics uncovers the inner workings of the campaign industry and how it often uses outdated strategies and biases to shape voter behavior and determine elections. He exposes a political environment that is confusing, polarizing, and alienating to voters.
